The DonateLife network

DonateLife is an initiative of the Organ and Tissue Authority, which works with states and territories, clinicians and the community sector to deliver the Australian Government’s national reform program to improve organ and tissue donation and transplantation outcomes.

The DonateLife network comprises organ and tissue donation agencies and staff in 72 hospitals across Australia, working specifically on organ and tissue donation.

 DonateLife Week 2018 (29 July – 5 August)

DonateLifeDonateLife Week is a week of activities to promote and raise awareness of organ and tissue donation. It provides a timely reminder to all Australians of the need to discuss their donation decision with loved ones, and to ask and know their donation decisions.

In 2017, 1,675 Australians received a lifesaving transplant thanks to the generosity of 510 deceased and 273 living donors and their families.

More than 1,400 Australians are today waiting for a life-saving or life-transforming transplant.

DonateLife Week 2018 (Sunday 29 July – Sunday 5 August) is inviting all Australians to ‘make their decision count’ by joining the online Australian Organ Donor Register at www.donatelife.gov.au

 A DonateLife poem

The poem below is courtesy of Sheena Hayes who wrote and performed this piece at 2017 Donate Week.

Four years
On the waiting list

Four years of being attached
On that dreaded machine

November 1st
The Nephrologist calls
We found you a kidney

Good news for me
The wait is over

Sad news for you
You just lost your boy

The pain of his loss
Is just the beginning for you
and me
I got a second chance to life

From strangers to family
Tears of pain
Tears of need
Not by choice
But by unfortunate
circumstances in life

As a piece of you
lives within me
Linked by blood compatibility

We are strangers but family
We are different but the same
Linked by pain and need

Born out of irony
Our lives will never be the same
This what happens
When you chose to Donate Life
